Introducing Gordi. This 20 year-old singer-songwriter deals in a brand of folk pop that adopts an old-fashioned simplicity, expressed with modern vigour and emotional conviction. Raised in the regional New South Wales town of Canowindra and schooled in Sydney, Gordi's sound draws in equal measures upon pop, folk, blues and country traditions. With a year of gigging around NSW under her belt, Gordi is thrilled to release her first EP, led by the buoyant radio-friendly single 'Away'. - With a piano teacher mother, naturally Gordi's musical instincts began on the ivory at an early age, later drawn to the earthiness of the steel string - the musical armoury of so many of her musical heroes. Gordi's diverse musical diet, including 'old-worlders' like Carole King, Eva Cassidy and Joni Mitchell, and modern folk pop purveyors like Tori Amos, Missy Higgins, Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson, has lent a timeless quality to her music. And while there's no formula to Gordi's songs, a clear thread links them - memorable, heartfelt lyrics, vibrant, dynamic instrumental arrangements and captivating melodies. An effortless pop sensibility that sounds at once fresh yet familiar. Gordi's music exudes a maturity that belies her 20 years, exhibited partly by her ability to paint lyrical introspection with a brush of playful earnestness. But for every shade of honesty in her musical palette, there's a matching shade of youthful imagination. The result is a varied repertoire of songs spanning the emotional spectrum from wistful aching to spirited celebration. But whatever the lyrical and musical content, it's enlivened by a versatile voice which is soulful and sweet, agile and assured. And it's still early days.
